Museu Local
Metangula, Mozambique

The "Metangula Museum Project" began in 2004 under the direction of Julio Mercader (University of Calgary). In addition to Dr. Mercader and myself, the project was assisted by then-BA student Mussa Raja (Eduardo Mondlane University). The project was made possible through local participation and generous financial and logistical support of the Mozambican government and the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation, in addition to other funding sources. Together we restored an historic building, collected oral traditions, created a storage repository for the region's archaeological heritage, opened the district's first library, and crafted a permanent exhibition covering topics related to local history and culture. The Museum officially passed to the local office of the Ministry of Education in February 2011. These photos document the building's transformation between 2006 and 2008, when it officially opened to the public.
