Moment One

Activity 2A: Chunking the Text

Facing History and Ourselves suggests giving students the opportunity to break a difficult text down into more manageable pieces. Students then rewrite these “chunks” in their own words. This can help students to identify key words and ideas, allows them opportunities to experiment with paraphrasing, and makes organizing and synthesizing information more manageable.[1]

Have students each select one narrative. For each paragraph of the narrative, they should summarize or paraphrase what is written in a single sentence.
